Politicians on Border Wall: “Hold My Beer”
There’s news that GOP leaders are considering withholding funding the border wall (here, here, and here) in the upcoming budget battle – and if they do, they are telling us (again) that We the People will be governed without our consent.
The wall is more than just a wall – it shows America’s ability to be great again.
First, its construction proves America’s greatness. Similar to JFK saying he wanted a man on the moon before 1970, Trump’s border wall marshals our attention and efforts to accomplishing something that benefits the entire country. America is great because it does great things.
Read this line carefully: my generation (and those after me) have not seen America do anything great – our view of the world “began” with America atop laurels. We don’t remember the crumbling wall. There’s been no man on the moon. As the Greatest Generation leaves us, the future must rely on Google to explain more and more of America’s greatness.
Millennials are bigger than the Boomers and they haven’t seen evidence of America’s greatness, just America’s excess.
Second, constructing the wall restores consent of the governed. It’s constitutional. It’s a proper function of the federal government. It’s a good use of tax dollars. It will protect Americans. And Americans want it. Those are all reasons why our elected officials SHOULD do it.
Republicans giving excuses against a popular mandate argue an open border mindset and bad priorities. Election do have consequences, but politicians try to avoid them.
Third, it attacks many cancers that plague America. Trillions in debt, an obese welfare state, and depressed wages for American jobs are major cancers in our nation’s stomach, heart, and mind. Like all cancers, they are metasticizing and destroying other areas of American greatness (the nuclear family, education, communities, and hope for the future).
The wall is a symbol that boldly puts national interest over special interest. It is an effort than can unify the American people and it restores the rule of law. Instead of lawless illegals benefiting from the blessings of liberty, we will uphold the value of respecting liberty as an idea, so that many more may benefit.
The wall will remind America what it means to be an American again. Freedom is not given, it is defended. Our government does not grant us freedom – we have it because we respect others as individuals and choose not to wield government to achieve our desires.
A big, beautiful border wall is the best way to Make America Great Again.
